A Western Australian surfer was given a shock in waters off a popular Perth beach when a shark knocked him from his board and grabbed the board's leg rope.

The animal grabbed the leg rope and pulled the surfer off the board, but the man was uninjured in the incident. He then managed to swim back to shore and alert authorities.
Rangers at the beach then closed nearby beaches today as Fisheries officers patrolled in search of the shark.
After several hours, beaches were eventually reopened.
