Shark bites surfer at New Smyrna Beach jetty
A shark bit a 24-year-old surfer from Gulfport about noon on Sunday, officials said.
The man who hails from Gulfport was not identified by Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Capt. Tammy Marris. He was surfing near the jetty in New Smyrna Beach about noon when he was bitten.
“He had minor lacerations to the foot,” Marris said. “He was treated at the scene and released.”
It is the eighth shark bite reported this year along Volusia’s shore.
“Otherwise the beach is quiet,” Marris said.
