Shark bites 12-year-old off Daytona Beach

A 12-year-old Ohio girl became the year's sixth shark bite victim in Volusia County when one of the creatures chomped on her ankle today as she rode a boogie board off Daytona Beach, a Beach Patrol spokesman said.
The girl was in about 4 feet of water north of the Zelda Beach Approach when a shark bit her on the right ankle, said Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn.
The 4 p.m. shark encounter was farther north than usual because most bites are reported south of the south jetty in New Smyrna Beach, Petersohn said. He said the offending shark was most likely a juvenile black tip or spinner.
Petershohn called the wounds minor but said they probably would require a few stitches to close. The parents declined emergency transport and drove the girl to a hospital in their car.
The water was murky and baitfish were present, increasing the likelihood of shark bites, Petersohn said.
