Shark Bites Reported In St. Johns, Volusia, Brevard Counties

POSTED: 10:42 pm EDT July 9, 2006

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Lifeguards said a young boy swimming Sunday in knee-deep water near the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club was bitten on the ankle by a shark.

The child was hospitalized, but the injuries were not life-threatening.

Witnesses say they saw a shark swimming in the shallow water near the time of the attack.

Volusia County authorities said a tourist didn't need medical treatment after being bitten on his foot by a shark Sunday afternoon.

The 40-year-old New York was in waist-deep water near the New Smyrna Beach jetty when he was bitten shortly after 5 p.m. A beach patrol officer said the man had two small cuts on the top of his foot.

On Saturday in Brevard County, authorities said a teenager was apparently bitten on the leg by a shark while swimming in the ocean.

Fire-rescue officials said the boy's mother heard him scream and saw him pulled under the water.

Authorities said he had a "significant bite" to one of his calf muscles. The boy was flown to a hospital, where he was in stable condition.

If confirmed as a shark bite, it would be at least the third shark bite of the season in Brevard County.

A man's hand was bitten May 10 off Cocoa Beach. Another man bitten May 11 on both feet required 30 stitches in his left foot and 150 stitches on the right foot to close the wounds.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Two separate shark attacks were reported over the weekend along Florida's East Coast, but neither victim received life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

On Sunday, an 11-year-old boy was bitten on the lower leg and ankle in the waters off Ponte Vedra Beach in St. Johns County.

Jeremy Robshaw, a spokesman for the St. Johns County Fire Rescue, said the boy, whose name was not released was walking in waist-deep water off Ponte Vedra Inn and Club when he reported being bitten by something.

The bite pattern seemed to match that of a shark, Robshaw told The St. Augustine Record.

"We have several witnesses who saw a shark swimming around," Robshaw said.

The boy was taken to Baptist South Hospital.

"The boy's injuries were not life threatening," said Chuck Mulligan, a spokesman for the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

In Brevard County, a teenage boy swimming off Playalinda Beach was attacked by a shark on his calf on Saturday.

The boy was flown to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Women and Children in Orlando.

The boy, who was 13 or 14, was in stable condition, Orlando Dominguez, a spokesman for Brevard County Fire-Rescue, told Florida Today.
