Girl, 7, bitten by shark in North Queensland

A seven-year-old girl is recovering after apparently being attacked by a shark off Russell Island, near Cairns.

The girl was bitten on the leg late on Saturday afternoon.

Paramedics said witnesses reported seeing a shark swimming away before the girl's mother made a frantic call for help.

The girl's laceration was dressed by the time help arrived and she was airlifted to Cairns Hospital in a stable condition.

Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Warren Painting said the girl's family were convinced a shark had bitten her.

"The shark was sighted but we have no idea what type shark it was," he told AAP.

Russell Island is one of five islands in the Frankland Group, part of an offshore national park southeast of Cairns.

It's understood the girl was on a camping trip with her mother and several others.
