NEW SMYRNA BEACH – An Okeechobee man became Volusia County’s second shark bite victim of the year.

The unidentified 20-year-old was surfing in front of the Minorca Condominium, 2600 block of North Peninsula Drive, late Monday afternoon when a shark grabbed his right ankle, Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn said this afternoon.

"It was very minor," he said. "Two or three puncture wounds."

Petersohn said it is unclear if the victim went to the hospital by personal automobile, but he was not transported by ambulance.

A 17-year-old girl from Mims was the first shark bite victim of 2009 when she suffered minor punctures to a foot while surfing south of the South Jetty on March 19.

Petersohn said April is a prime month for bites because of murky water, good waves and lots of bait fish in the surf.
