ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A fox bit a woman and a shark bit a man in separate parts of the county Friday afternoon, though neither victim sustained serious injuries, a St. Lucie County Fire District spokeswoman said.

Fire district crews were called at 12:39 p.m. to the 2500 block of Southwest Hinchman Street in Port St. Lucie and found a woman who'd reportedly been bitten by a fox, Fire District spokeswoman Catherine Chaney said.

The woman, who is in her mid 40s, was working in her yard when the attack happened. She ran inside and her dog ran out where it fought with the fox and also was bitten.

Less than an hour later, crews met a surfer south of Florida Power & Light Co.'s nuclear plant. A shark bit the man, who is in his 20s, on his forearm as the man was surfing. He was treated at the scene, and told medics he'd drive himself to the hospital.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Alexander Wagner came to St. Lucie County in search of better waves and went home a shark bite victim.

Wagner, 31, of West Palm Beach, on Friday came to Walton Rocks Beach on a day off from work and was surfing about 200 yards off shore at the time of the bite, which left him with puncture wounds in his lower left arm and wrist.

“I should have used better judgment before I went out because of the conditions,” Wagner said Monday. “I was surfing alone at an unguarded beach in murky waters.”

After about 45 minutes in the water, Wagner said he went to go under a breaking wave and felt a bump on his side just before he was bit.

“I really didn’t feel the bite because it was so quick,” Wagner said, estimating the shark was two to three feet long.

Wagner paddled in after the incident, saying the trip was a bit nerve-wracking because he was bleeding.

“That’s the only thing that kind of scared me,” said Wagner, who is involved in commercial refrigeration.

Wagner, who called 911 to report the incident, sought medical attention in West Palm Beach, receiving antibiotics and a tetanus shot but no stitches.

A St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office report indicates the punctures were in a “4 to 5 inch arch.”

Wagner said he’s been surfing for about six years and said the incident hasn’t soured him on the sport.

“What’s the odds of getting bit twice?” Wagner said. “It wasn’t that bit of a deal.”
