Taiwan's Air Force helicopter performs rescue for shark-bit fisherman

TAIPEI, TAIWAN - A Taiwanese fisherman was rescued and rushed to a hospital by an Air Force helicopter after he was bitten by a shark yesterday.

The Kaohsiung fishing boat Sheng Ji Cheng (????) had been fishing around Taitung when one of its crew was bitten on his right thigh by a shark, said the Chiayi Air Force Base. The base received an emergency notification from the National Rescue Command Center concerning the shark attack at 2:05 a.m., reporting that the victim was unconscious after losing large quantities of blood.

The centre requested the military dispatch a rescue helicopter to provide emergency services.

According to the Ministry of National Defence, the Chiayi Base sent an S-70C-6 "Seagull" helicopter. The helicopter, however, had to land in Taitung to replenish fuel as the boat was beyond the helicopter's flying distance.

The S-70C-6 eventually reached the scene at 5:21 a.m. The victim was discovered conscious but suffering from severe blood loss, and was transported to the Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taichung, before later being transferred to the Kaohsiung Chang Gung Hospital in an ambulance.

The Chiayi Air Force Base reported the helicopter's mission as successful and noted that it returned to Chiayi at 7:19 a.m.
