PONCE INLET, Fla. -- Officials said a shark bit a 15-year-old boy as he waded into the water to go surfing south of Daytona Beach, according to FLORIDA TODAY news partner WKMG Local 6.

The boy suffered minor cuts to the top and bottom of his left foot Saturday in the waters near the Ponce Inlet jetty.

Officials said the boy stepped on a two- to three-foot shark in about two feet of water.

Shark bites teen after he steps on it

STAFF REPORT

A shark bit a 15-year-old boy as he waded into the water to go surfing near the Ponce Inlet jetty Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The boy suffered minor cuts to the top and bottom of his left foot, said Scott Petersohn, spokesman for the Volusia County Beach Patrol. The teen´s name was not available.

Around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, halfway between the jetty and the Beach Street approach, the boy stepped on a 2- to 3-foot shark in about two feet of water, Petersohn said.

An EVAC ambulance transported the boy to Halifax Medical Center in stable condition, said Mark O´Keefe, spokesman for EVAC.

There is no reason to think that a significant number of sharks are feeding in the area Petersohn said, because the ocean has been turbulent and murky, making it difficult for sharks to swim near shore.

Still, "they´re always out there," he said, "near the jetty."

Posted October 30, 2005

VOLUSIA COUNTY -- A 15-year-old boy received minor injuries from a shark bite Saturday at Ponce Inlet Jetty.

The boy, whose name was not released, was wading in about 2 feet of murky water when he either stepped on or put his foot in the mouth of a small shark, said Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn.

The 2- to 3-foot shark clamped down but then swam away.

Bystanders, including a nurse, treated the boy for cuts and punctures to the foot. He was taken by EVAC Ambulance to Halifax Medical Center for stitches.
