NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. —

So far, March has been pretty active when it comes to sharks in Volusia County, the so-called "shark bite capital of the world."

Just this week, a huge shark was spotted close to shore in Ponce Inlet and two people were bitten by sharks this month.

One of the victims told WESH 2, despite the close encounter, he can't wait to get back in the water.

This past Sunday, it was a 20-year-old surfer from Altamonte Springs on the wrong end of the teeth.

"I felt like a grabbing on my foot," Eric String said.

String is a student at Florida Atlantic University, but he was in town last weekend and headed for the inlet in New Smyrna Beach, home of the best waves in the southeast, also home to lots of predators like sharks.

"I think it realized right when it bit me that I was a human and it just thought I was a fish, and I was kind of in its area so I don't think it was its fault at all," he said.

String was riding his brand new board in about 7-8 feet of water when he jumped off to dip his head in the water. A shark chomped down on his right foot.

"It was on the top and the bottom of my foot and like pretty far in the middle," he said.

String paddled quickly to shore where first bystanders, then rescuers helped him, wrapping the foot. He was later treated at an urgent care. They cleaned the lacerations and he didn't need stitches. Though String didn't see the shark, we all know they are there.

String is out of the water for two weeks while the injury heals, but the chance to meet with the animal won't stop him from what he loves.

"Even if it was once every few years, I think I would still surf, if that was the risk," String said.

Last year, 16 people were bitten by sharks in Volusia County. Typically the most active months are between July and October and so it seems we're getting an early start.

Incident marks first shark bite of 2022 in county

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – A fisherman was bitten by a shark Wednesday in Volusia County, officials said.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m., north of New Smyrna Beach.

Volusia County Beach Safety said the 21-year-old New Jersey man was fishing in waist-deep water when he was bitten by a black-tip shark.

The man was not seriously injured, according to beach officials.

It’s the first confirmed shark bite of the year in Volusia County.
