WA beach on high alert after paddle boarder knocked off by shark

A popular surfing beach in WA will remain closed after a surfer was knocked off his stand up paddle board by a shark.

Around 3pm yesterday 75-year-old Gary May was paddle boarding at Yallingup Mainbreak when he was bumped off his board.

Mr May was about 400 metres offshore, and made it safely to the beach where he observed bite marks to the top and bottom of the board.
A member of the public reported the interaction to local water police at 3:21pm.
Mr May reported his experience on a local surfing group on social media.
"Halfway out in the deep water channel to the north, kneeling up paddling, my board was struck suddenly with enough force to fling me forward and onto a head that had the whole rail in its mouth," he wrote.
"I jumped back onto the board real quick losing the paddle in the process."

He said his biggest regret was not bringing another board after his first was bitten.
The surf spot was closed to the public as a precaution, and rangers from the Shire of Busselton are conducting patrols throughout today, including surveillance flights by the Surf Life Saving WA helicopter.
The paddle-board will be transported by Fisheries Officers to Perth for scientific analysis.
Authorities are asking members of the public to report all shark sightings to the Water Police on 9442 8600.
