A teenage boy witnessed a shark bite his surf ski before it retreated into the ocean, where only its 'bright red eyes' could be seen.

Surf lifesaver Jed Ffrench, 17, was paddling with four friends when he was attacked by a bronze whaler about 2km off the shore of Glenelg Beach in Adelaide at 7pm on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old said he could only see the shark's 'bright red eyes' staring at him from the water and was unable to tell the predator's size.

Jed said he felt a 'big thud' and saw the shark biting his surf ski before the predator submerged below the surface, according to The Advertiser.

SA Police says the bronze whaler shark was two metres long, which is average for the species.

All five boys, who are all surf lifesavers, paddled back to shore to sound the alarm, prompting everyone to leave the water.

A group of surf lifesavers nippers, aged 5 to 13, were also in the water training and evacuated along with the general public.

Jed's surf ski had bite marks from the shark's razor sharp teeth.

He and his four friends were not injured but SLSSA lifesaving and emergency operations manager Daniel Willetts said they are shaken up by the incident.

'Go about your normal business and if you do hear the shark alarm, stay calm and evacuate the water. Don't be deterred,' he told The Advertiser.

'They're a long way from shore, beach goers shouldn't be alarmed.'

They don't often attack humans but are known to become aggressive when in the presence of food, so a number of spear fishers have been recorded.

A bodysurfer was bitten by a bronze whaler in Papamoa on New Zealand's North Island last Wednesday but managed to escape with his life.
