A shark bit a teenager surfing off the coast of Florida on Saturday, in the 10th known attack in the area this year.

The unnamed 17-year-old was surfing off the coast of Ormond Beach, a popular tourist spot in east-central Florida, at around 4 p.m. local time when a shark bit his right leg, said Captain Tamra Malphurs, of the Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue.

Before the attack, the teenager was waist deep in the water. The victim lost his surfboard as he swam between the sea shore and a sandbar. The shark bit him as he tried to retrieve his board.

The teenager was taken to a local hospital. He needed stitches, but his injuries were not life threatening.

The attack is the 10th to happen in Volusia County this year, exceeding the nine recorded in 2019.

Shark attacks in the county usually happen by the jetty in New Smyrna Beach, Malphurs told The Daytona News-Journal, but they can also strike in other locations. Due to the relatively high number of attacks that take place in New Smyrna Beach, it is informally known as the "shark attack capital of the world."

In September, Eric Bowman, 48, became the ninth shark attack victim in Volusia County this year, after two incidents occurred in the area in as many days. Bowman was waist-deep in the water near the city of Daytona Beach Shores when he felt something bite his left foot, The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported at the time. Bowman said he did not see what bit him, but that it quickly let go. Bowman was left with minor cuts and a puncture, and was treated at the scene.

The day before, a shark bit a surfer's hand as he paddled near a jetty in the Volusia County town of Ponce Inlet. Cole Smyth required surgery to fix damage to his hand, as well as 40 stitches. It is believed a bull or tiger shark bit him.

It was not clear what types of sharks bit Bowman or the teenage surfer.

Asked to offer advice to those worried about shark attacks in Volusia County, Malphurs told Newsweek: "When people hear about shark bites it can sound scary but we would like people to know that rip currents are more of a danger than sharks. We strongly advise people to always swim in front of a lifeguard."

Malphurs said bait fish in the water or birds diving to feed is a sign that there are large fish feeding in the area, and it is wise to temporarily leave until they are gone
