Shark alert: Injidup Beach in Yallingup closed after surfer knocked from board

A shark warning has been issued for Injidup Beach near Yallingup after a shark knocked a surfer off his board.

A local surfer was knocked off his board while paddling for a wave about 5.15pm tonight.

The man returned to shore, near the Injidup car park, uninjured.

The incident triggered a shark warning and prompted the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development to remind people of a current beach closure at Canal Rocks.

“To reduce the threat to people, DPIRD would like to remind the public that a Reg 44 beach closure issued by DBCA remains in place due to a whale carcass,” an alert said.

The closure includes the area from the shoreline to one kilometre out to sea. This means beaches and waters in this area cannot be used by divers, surfers and swimmers. This closure does not apply to vessels.

The closure will remain in force at least until 6pm on Wednesday 29 May 2019, however further reviews will be conducted up until this date.

People are being urged to take additional caution in the Injidup area and keep up to date on the latest detection and sighting information by checking the SharkSmart website or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.

If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600.
