WEST END, Bahamas -- A U.S. Coast Guard jayhawk helicopter has flown a West Palm Beach charter dive operator from the islands to St. Mary's Medical Center after the man was attacked by a shark.

The Coast Guard confirms a 55-year-old shark bite victim was picked up from a charter vessel north of West End, Bahamas, due east of Palm Beach. Jim Abernethy, 55, was on a diving excursion with his 65-foot diving vessel Shear Water when he was bitten on the arm.

Abernethy operates a scuba diving operation in West Palm Beach that offers shark and dolphin experience dives.

According to Abernethy's website, the Shear Water was on a week-long shark expedition, diving for tiger and great hammerhead sharks that departed Jan. 21 and was scheduled to return Jan. 27.
