Encounter with shark doesn't deter surfer

A North Broulee surfer was back in the water yesterday despite having her board bitten by a metre-long shark.

The surfer, Bernadette Davis, of Tomakin, was in the water at 7.45am. According to Far South Coast Surf Life Saving assistant director Andrew Edmunds, Ms Davis swam over the shark, which came up from behind to bite her surfboard. She initially thought she had run into a rock until she looked back and saw the shark biting her board.

The surfer was only waist-deep in the water when she got on her board and had the close encounter after just a couple of paddles.

Her partner was also in the water at the time and the pair were alone in the surf.

''My partner paddled out and felt like she hit a rock, turned around and saw a shark,'' the male surfer said.

''She yelled, 'Shark! Get out of the water!'''

The weather conditions were overcast and visibility was also reduced because of thick weeds in the water.

''Luckily we were the only ones out there. It was hard to tell what type of shark it was,'' he said.

''It could have happened at any beach, any place on the South Coast.''

Far South Coast Surf Life Saving confirmed the incident. ''At the time there were no lifesavers on duty. The type of shark involved in the incident is unknown, but the surfer was unharmed,'' Mr Edmunds said.

''The surfer did not require medical attention and the only reported damage was bite marks to the board.''

The pair came back ashore, but the male surfer returned to the water after 45 minutes and the woman joined him later.

The woman said she was concerned her encounter could portray a bad image of sharks, but insisted she was in its domain. The life-long surfer said she had never before seen a shark while she was in the water.

A surfer has escaped injury after a shark attack at a beach on the New South Wales far south coast beach, but his board has been damaged.

It is understood a shark bit the surfer's board at South Broulee early this morning.

Andrew Edmunds from the Far South Coast Surf Life Saving branch says the size or species of shark is not known.

"The male surfer didn't sustain any injuries in the incident, but his board was damaged by the attack, by the shark," he said.

"The type of shark is unknown."

Mr Edmunds says people should avoid swimming at dawn and dusk.

"We'd recommend people to avoid going in the waters early in the morning and at dusk and also avoid swimming in murky waters and if they do happen to see a shark then raise the alarm and let people know so they don't get attacked," he said.
