Shark Attack at Honokowai Beach in Maui Hawaii USA
Beach closed after report of shark bite
HONOKOWAI - State conservation and resource enforcement officers shut down a section of beach at Honokowai on Saturday evening after a swimmer reported being bitten by a small shark.
Maui District enforcement officials said the swimmer's injuries were minor. He had driven himself to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room and told personnel he was bitten by a 2- to 3-foot reef shark. No other information on his injuries was available.
Randy Awo, chief of the Maui enforcement division, said the swimmer reported he had been in shallow but murky water when he saw a school of weke, including one fish that was injured. He then felt a bump and realized he had been bitten by the shark, Awo said.
State officials will assess the situation at the beach this morning to determine whether it needs to remain closed, he said.
