16-year-old boy nipped by shark
An unidentified 16-year-old boy wading waist-deep in water was bitten by a shark Saturday afternoon in New Smyrna Beach, authorities said.
"At first he thought it was a jellyfish sting," said Capt. Scott Petersohn, Volusia County Beach Patrol spokesman.
But it turned out that the wounds on the back of his leg just above the right ankle were actually a shark bite, Petersohn said. The bite happened about 1 p.m.
The teenager was treated for minor injuries on the scene just south of the Beachway Avenue approach and taken to Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach, Petersohn said.
"It was your typical New Smyrna bite," Petersohn said. "He probably only needed a few stitches."
