NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- A 14-year-old girl surfing in New Smyrna Inlet Sunday morning was bitten by what appeared to be a shark as she got off her surfboard.

The attacked happened in the 2800 block of South Atlantic Avenue near the Minorca Condominiums.

According to a Volusia Beach Patrol spokesman, the girl was out in the surf around 8:45 when she got off the board in knee-deep water.

She felt something grab hold of her foot, and when she got to shore she had bite marks on her foot and ankle.

The girl's father took her to Fish Memorial Hospital to be treated.

Water temperatures in the area were cooler than normal at the time, and the water was murky due to offshore winds.

The Beach Patrol spokesman said that the inlet draws a lot of sharks, and many shark attacks occur in that area.

A teenage girl was the seventh shark bite victim in Volusia County.

Beach patrol said a 14-year-old girl was bitten below the knee Sunday morning by a shark while surfing at the north end of New Smyrna Beach near Ponce Inlet.

She was treated on the scene by rescue personnel and then taken to Fish Memorial by her father. Her wound was severe enough to require stitches.

The victim said due to poor water visibility she didn’t see the shark until she was bitten while in knee deep water.

Towers at the beach are flying the purple and yellow “marine life present” flags.
