NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- News 13 has confirmed a surfer was bitten by a shark Sunday, bringing the total number of shark bites in 2008 to six.
A spokesman with Volusia County Beach Patrol said the victim, whose name was not released, was not treated by lifeguards, but instead chose to go on his own to Bert Fish Medical Center.
That surfer was bitten on the foot near the same area surfer Joey Giangrasso was bitten a week before, one-quarter mile south of the Jetty, a popular spot with surfers. See related story.
New Smyrna Beach gained notoriety in 2001 as the shark bite capital of the world, when a record number of 21 shark bites were reported that year.
Beach Patrol said there were eight shark bites during the entire month of April.
