WAILUKU, MAUI ยป A swimmer said he punched a 7-foot-long tiger shark on its snout Saturday as it cruised up toward him about 35 yards off Kamaole I beach park in South Maui.

"He was two feet away from my face when I threw the punch. It was pretty amazing," said Brad Grissom, 49, of Kula.

"Then I just bolted straight to shore."

Grissom, who swims regularly as part of his triathlete training, said he feared what might have happened to him if he had not struck the shark.

Grissom said the water was a little murky that day. County lifeguards closed the nearby beaches after hearing about Grissom's encounter at 7:45 a.m. Saturday. The beaches were reopened after about 4 1/2 hours.
