Surfer suffers shark bite to foot

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A Casselberry teen became the year's fifth shark bite victim in Volusia County on Thursday afternoon.

Chaz Cecil, 18, was surfing about a half-mile south of the Ponce de Leon Inlet about 4 p.m. when he was nipped on the right foot, Beach Patrol officials said.

"This is a pretty typical Volusia County bite," spokesman Capt. Scott Petersohn said. "A couple of small lacerations to the top of the foot."'

Cecil was taken to Bert Fish Medical Center by ambulance, where he was treated for the wound.

Hospital officials said Cecil and his parents declined to be interviewed.

While waiting outside the emergency room, Cecil's 15-year-old sister, Britni, said her brother had been surfing for about four years, seriously for the past year.

She said she and her family were fishing in the Intracoastal Waterway, while Cecil was surfing with a friend, Kyle Cyphers.

Cyphers said he was down the beach and did not know about the mishap until someone brought his friend to his sport utility vehicle, where Cecil waited for lifeguards and EVAC ambulance personnel to arrive.

Petersohn said as with many bites in Volusia County waters, the shark likely didn't know what he was grabbing and when it realized, it let go.

"This was a case of mistaken identity," he said.
