Man suffers minor shark bite near jetty

Staff Report
A 40-year-old man from New York didn't need any stitches after being bitten by a shark Sunday, authorities said.

The man was wading in waist-deep water near the New Smyrna Beach jetty shortly after 5p.m. when a shark bit him on the top of his left foot, said Volusia County Beach Patrol Officer Michael Berard.

"He had two small cuts to the top of foot," Berard said. "It wasn't even worth any stitches."

The man from Fayetteville, N.Y., refused treatment, Berard said. He was with his family on vacation.

The bite was the fourth reported off Volusia County shores this year.
