Shark attacks deckhand on trawler
A fisherman was bitten by a shark on board a boat off the far south coast of New South Wales overnight.

The 25-year-old was working as a deckhand on a trawler off the coast from Bermagui.

The long-line trawler was about seven nautical miles off the coast at about 11:00pm AEST yesterday, with the crew hauling in the catch.

It included a 1.5 metre long mako shark which, as it was pulled over the side, lashed out and bit the deckhand on the leg.

The captain radioed the ambulance service to say the man had suffered a deep gash to his thigh and an ambulance was waiting at the Bermagui wharf when the trawler arrived back shortly before 2:00am.

Ambulance officers say the crew had managed to stop the bleeding and no further treatment was needed.
