An Altamonte Springs man was bit by a shark in New Smyrna Beach Sunday afternoon, officials said, making it the second shark bite of the season.

The incident occurred by the jetty in the 2700 block of Atlantic Avenue shortly after 3 p.m., said Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Capt. Tamra Malphurs.

Record-breaking year:16 shark bites reported in Volusia County in 2021. It's the second most in 20 years.

The 20-year-old man was surfing in about 7 feet of water when he was bitten on the right foot, Malphurs said.

The injuries were non-life-threatening and the resident was not transported by ambulance to the hospital. The shark was not seen, Malphurs said.

This year's first shark bite occurred March 9 when a 21-year-old New Jersey man was bitten – also in New Smyrna Beach. He was fishing in waist-deep water when he was bitten by a black tip shark in the knee and calf. He was not transported to the hospital, officials said.

Last year, 16 people suffered shark bites in Volusia County, with the most incidents reported in New Smyrna Beach. All of the injuries were non-life threatening, officials said.
How to avoid shark bites

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission offers some tips on how to avoid shark bites:

Swim in a group. Sharks are more likely to attack a solitary individual.

Swim only in areas tended by lifeguards.

Don't wander too far from shore. The closer you are to assistance, the more likely you are to survive.

Avoid being in the water during twilight and after dark, when sharks are most active.

Don't enter the water if bleeding. Sharks have a strong sense of smell.

Avoid wearing shiny jewelry, which can resemble the sheen of fish scales.

Avoid waters known for fishing. Diving seabirds are a good indicator that schools of baitfish are in an area.

Be careful around sandbars and near steep drop-offs. These are favorite hangouts for sharks.

Use extra caution when waters are murky.

Avoid excess splashing, which can draw a shark's attention.

Sharks can see contrast particularly well, meaning uneven tans or bright colored clothing may draw their attention.

Don't let pets in the water.

Don't enter the water if sharks are known to be present, and get out of the water if sharks are sighted.

Never harass a shark.
