Italian Tourist Killed by Shark in Crystal Blue Waters of Colombia's Caribbean Sea

A 56-year-old Italian tourist vacationing in Colombia died after being bit by a shark in what locals describe as a popular snorkeling area in the Caribbean Sea, local media reported.

The man, identified as Antonio Roseto Degli Abruzzi, had been swimming near the coast of Colombia’s San Andres Island on Friday when the attack occurred, Colombia press said, CBS News reported.

The area Abruzzi had been swimming in is known as, "La Piscinita the Natural Pool," which is located on the southwest side of San Andres, approximately 235 miles off the coast of Nicaragua. The area is known for snorkeling and diving due to the crystal clear waters, according to the San Andres Island of Colombia website.

The shark that killed Abruzzi was identified as a tiger shark, according to the Archipelago Press.

On Friday, the Archipelago Press posted on their Twitter a video of what they claim is the tiger shark responsible.

“These two ocelot sharks are the two sharks that this afternoon attacked a foreign tourist in the La Piscinita sector, causing his death. In the last two weeks, sharks have appeared in shallow waters north and south of San Andrés,” they wrote.

Tourist killed in shark attack screamed for help as water turned blood red

A tragic tourist killed in a deadly shark attack is said to have cried out for help as the sea turned horribly dark red with blood.

Italian Antonio Straccialini, 56, was horribly mauled to death by an eight-foot tiger shark that ripped a piece of his leg off as he swam.

Witnesses said they heard the man screaming for help after being bitten by the gigantic creature.

He was swimming in the waters off the idyllic Colombian island of San Andres when the brutal attack happened, reports The Sun.

After the first-ever fatal shark attack on the Caribbean island, photos showed the man lying on his back with a large chunk of his right thigh missing before he was rushed to hospital.
The tragic man suffered severe blood loss from the mutilation and went into hypovolemic shock before dying.

Marine biologist Rodrigo Lopez said: “People are very worried about what happened and they’re not letting people in the water.

“A witness said the man who was attacked was a good swimmer and had been in the sea for quite a while and when he went deeper a second time after coming back to shore he started screaming for help and was surrounded by blood.”

The Teleislas channel said the unusual attack took place in an area known as “La Piscinita,“ on the southwest side of San Andres, which is about 380 kilometers (235 miles) off the coast of Nicaragua.
