Girl, 9, bitten on leg by shark off central Queensland island

A young girl is recovering in hospital after she was bitten on the leg by a shark off the central Queensland coast on Wednesday.

The nine-year-old was in waters around North West Island, about 100 kilometres east of Yeppoon, when the attack occurred about 5.30pm.

Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman Emily Mildred said the girl suffered a bite to the back of her leg and also puncture wounds to her foot.

"Thankfully for this patient, a registered nurse was at the scene and treated her immediately for her injuries," Ms Mildred said.

Bundaberg's RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter was dispatched and an ambulance crew were also taken to the scene by a Volunteer Marine Rescue vessel.

The victim and her mother were taken to Heron Island by a private vessel to meet the rescue helicopter, an estimated 40-minute boat ride away.

RACQ LifeFlight Rescue spokesman Tony Miller said the girl would recover from her injuries.

"She had a confrontation with what we believe is a lemon shark and managed to get her foot into the shark’s mouth somehow," he said.

The child was airlifted in a stable condition through to Bundaberg Hospital.

According to the state government's fish species identification website, lemon sharks can grow up to three metres in length and is named after the pale yellow tinge of its skin.

There have been only 10 unprovoked attacks by lemon sharks as at 2018, all occurring in Florida and the Caribbean, according to the International Shark Attack File.

The incident comes less than two weeks after a middle-aged man was airlifted to hospital with minor injuries after being bitten by a shovel nose shark off the island.

The largest island in the Capricornia Cays National Park, it features a camping area accessible only by boat and can accommodate up to 150 people.
