SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WJAR) — A surfer is warning others after he says he was bitten by a shark at a beach in South Kingstown.

Chase Clary, 18, said he was vacationing in Rhode Island when he stopped to surf at Moonstone Beach Monday.

"I got right into the water. As soon as I got about waist-deep, something just snags my foot," Clary said. "I pull it, I have to shove it off and I bolt back to the beach."

Clary said he believes he was bitten by a small shark.

"My foot was just covered in blood, holes all over it. I was kind of freaking out like, 'Did that actually just happen?' I’ve spent my whole life in the water," Clary said.

Clary was treated for his wounds at The Miriam Hospital and is taking antibiotics. The recovery will take about a month, he said.

"It was an experience for sure. It’s not going to keep me out of the water. I love the ocean," Clary said.

Viewers told NBC 10 News that a second shark bite was reported in the area.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said it believes Clary was bit by a sand tiger shark.

University of Rhode Island Biology Sciences professor Dr. Brad Wetherbee said the last recorded shark bite was in 1895.
