Shark bite victim recalls being bitten off Big Talbot Island -
Another victim who was bitten by a shark at Big Talbot Island on Friday, and he spoke exclusively with Action News Jax about his attack.
Peter Vergenz said he was in waist-deep water when he was attacked.
Vergenz said he was out running the trails on Big Talbot Island on Friday around 7 p.m. and decided to jump in the water to cool off. He said the next thing he knew, a shark grabbed the back of his calf, took a bite and then let go.
He said he was previously a Jacksonville Beach lifeguard and is currently in the Marine Reserves so he knew he immediately had to stop the bleeding.
He said he grabbed his shirt and a belt and wrapped his leg until help came.
“I flipped over a trash can that was right there and propped up my foot to slow the bleeding,” Vergenz said.
