Shark bites man on foot at Pepper Park in St. Lucie; beach closed to swimming
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Double red flags are flying and Pepper Park Beachside is closed to swimming after a 22-year-old man was bit on the foot by a shark early Monday afternoon at the county beach, officials said.
The man was bodyboarding between two lifeguard towers at the park at 3302 N. State Road A1A about 12:30 p.m. when he felt a shark bite his foot, said county spokesman Erick Gill. The man swam to shore and waved to lifeguards, who helped him to a tower.
The man, who Gill said had two deep cuts that would require stitches, was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce.
A single red flag was being flown Monday morning at Pepper Park because of rip currents, Gill said. After the shark bite, that changed to double red flags to close swimming at the beach, he said.
Mullet had begun to run in the murky water about noon, not long before the shark bite.
On Sunday morning, a shark bit a Vero Beach teen on his hand off New Smyrna Beach.
