60-year-old man survives Maui shark attack
HONOLULU —The shark attack on Maui this year happened Wednesday.
Officials say a 60-year-old man suffered lacerations to his left foot after being bitten by a grey 6 to 8 foot reef shark.
It happened in the afternoon about 200 yards offshore of Paia Beach.
The victim was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Officials say the victim swam to shore on his own.
At first light Thursday, the Department of Land and Natural Resources will be closing a 2-mile section of beach at Paia Bay to assess any sharks.
If no sharks are spotted in the morning, the waters will reopen at noon.
Before this incident, Maui was on a six-month streak with no reports of shark attacks compared to end of 2013 with six reported shark attacks.
