Girl, 13, bit by shark in New Smyrna Beach

A 13-year-old girl suffered a minor shark bite in New Smyrna Beach about 1:15 p.m. Thursday, an official said.

The girl was bit on her heel while in about 3 feet of water and treated on scene for a minor cut while in the 2600 block of North Atlantic Avenue, Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Capt. Tammy Marris said.

The girl was taken to the hospital by the people she was at the beach with, Marris said.

The shark is believed to have been about 3 feet long.

This is the seventh bite reported this year.

The presence of bait fish was cited as the reason for the recent presence of sharks, which resulted in two people suffering bites Saturday.
