SHARK BITTEN TEEN TESTS CROUDFUNDING WATERS FOR RECOVERY
Kiowa Gatewood, who lost a chunk of his left leg to a 10' tiger shark, is seeking assistance with his hospital bills through an Indiegogo fundraising campaign.
On July 29th, 19-year-old Gatewood was surfing the murky waters of Ewa Beach on Oahu when he came face to face with a 10' tiger shark. He managed to punch the shark and escape to shore - only after the shark bit his left leg from knee to mid-shin. Gatewood's cousin, Ka'o Carlos, started an Indiegogo fundraising campaign at http://AttackedShark.com in an effort to raise $20,000 to pay for the hospital bills.
Carlos describes the shark attack on his cousin as "the 2nd biggest tragedy of his life". He explains "When Kiowa was 11, his mother Linda (my cousin and God-Mother), passed away from an overdose."
He continues "Aunty Eleanor, Kiowa's grandmother, took on full responsibility and raised Kiowa and 3 of his siblings - all on her own and on very little income. She is truly an angel - in fact, she is the person helping Kiowa recover from his shark attack right now."
Gatewood is responsible for 20% of his operation and hospital stay totaling well over $100,000. He will not be able to work until February, 2014 as he endures months of physical therapy at an additional cost.
When asked what inspired him to create the fundraising website, Carlos confessed "Kiowa is an easy person to rally behind. He has constantly been surrounded by a group of people that deeply care about him - helping him get through the tough times. I hope that others find it in their hearts to join that group and help out with a donation."
Donations can be made by clicking on the "Contribute Now" button at http://AttackedShark.com. Hawaii residents can also make a donation at any Bank of Hawaii branch under the "Kiowa Gatewood Recovery Fund".
