A GOLD Coast teacher mauled by a shark at a northern NSW surf spot says he looked back after he was bitten 'to see if my foot was still there'.
But despite the terrifying attack, Nigel Hughes, 39, has vowed to get back on his surfboard as soon as he can walk again.
Mr Hughes, deputy principal at Palm Beach-Currumbin High School, was surfing with mates during a family holiday at Evans Heads on the NSW North Coast on Sunday when the shark struck.
"I got on a wave and was paddling to catch it when it hit me like a baseball bat to the foot," he said.
"I was able to catch a wave in and looked back to see if my foot was still there - luckily, it was."
With his left big toe hanging from his foot, which was bleeding profusely, Mr Hughes managed to limp to the beach where his friends wrapped the wound in a towel.
They took him to Lismore Base Hospital where he underwent surgery before being released yesterday.
"The foot was pretty mangled but the doc said he managed to sew it up okay," Mr Hughes said.
"It was only my second surf of the holiday, so I wasn't happy."
The attack forced Mr Hughes to cut short his holiday and return home. He said his two young sons, aged 4 and 5, knew something had happened to him but he had not told them what because he did not want to frighten them.
Mr Hughes, who also teaches surfing at PBC High, said the scare would not stop him riding the waves.
"I'll be back into it as soon as I can walk again," he said.
Evans Head is notorious for sharks, including Great Whites, but local fishermen believed the one that attacked Mr Hughes was most likely a bronze whaler or bull shark - both of which are known for their aggression.
