Shark bites unsuspecting surfer sitting on his board in Texas Gulf. ‘He was lucky’

large shark bit a surfer off the Texas coast after it "bumped him from underneath."

The Corpus Christi surfer, known only as Jim, had been in the North Packery Channel on December 6 when he collided with a shark.

Fellow surfer Tommy Shilts , who witnessed the incident, told 3NEWS: "He caught the bottom jaw of a pretty large shark, it looked like. But it just kind of bumped him from underneath. He said it was a pretty hard bump."

Jim managed to make it to shore where he was treated for the bite. A picture posted to Facebook by Shilts shows the surfer with a large bite mark stretching across his foot.

Shilts looked after the surfer until lifeguards showed up, he said on Facebook.

"He should be fine and is in good spirits. Even though a shark bite is never good, we both feel like he was lucky under the circumstances," Shilts said in the post.

It is not clear what species of shark carried out the attack but bull sharks and blacktip sharks are the most commonly sighted species off the Texas coast.

Bull sharks are one of the "big three" shark species most commonly responsible for attacks, along with the great white shark and tiger shark.

Bull sharks have a reputation for being particularly aggressive, but attacks remain relatively rare.

Since records began, bull sharks have been responsible for 93 confirmed non-fatal attacks in unprovoked incidents, the International Shark Attack File reports, while blacktip sharks have been responsible for 35.

Positive identification of attacking sharks is very difficult since victims are rarely able to make adequate observations of the species involved during the "heat" of the interaction.

"It's just very rare, doesn't happen often, just kind of wild. His bite, even though it looks pretty bad, he got off pretty easy in my opinion and he agrees," Shilts said.

Surfers have noticed an increase in shark activity in the area recently, 3NEWS reported.

"The biggest thing is to not act like prey, you are entering into their home," Kesley Banks, an associate research scientist with the Center for Sportfish Science and Conservation at the HARTE Research Institute at A&M Corpus Christi told 3NEWS.

Sharks may attack surfers for a variety of reasons, for example, the movements surfers make in the water can sometimes mimic those of prey, meaning a shark will come to investigate.

More often than not, a shark will bite a human and let go once they realise it is not its usual prey.
