South Carolina Shark attack leaves woman with leg injury
July 11, 2022 Kevin McMurray
A New Jersey woman was bitten on the leg by a shark in South Carolina.
The woman, who chose to remain anonymous, spent as much time at the beach as should could growing up.
“Ever since I was a kid, I always loved the ocean,” she told Tracking Sharks. “I’ve swam with with stingrays, eels, and barracudas and that never bothered me.”
Unfortunately, as she was swimming May 24, off the main beach of Kiawah Island she would have a run-in with a shark.
It was her first visit to South Carolina, and she said the water was a little choppy and incredibly cloudy as she swam in the waist-deep water.
Around 1:30 p.m. a shark grabbed the 30-year-old’s left calf biting down before releasing and swimming away.
Despite multiple lacerations on both sides of her calf, she was able to swim around 40 feet back to shore where she was treated on the beach and then transported to the hospital.
“Funny enough stingrays and sharks were always my favorite animals growing up, but now when I see the water I can’t help but feel afraid of what’s underneath,” she said. “…before I wouldn’t give it a second thought.”
