Peyton Shields shark attack Crescent Beach shark attack Florida shark attack
A 10-year-old girl boogie-boarding at a Florida beach reportedly fought off a shark that bit her hand and legs.
Peyton Shields was celebrating her birthday Friday evening at Crescent Beach, about 40 miles north of Daytona Beach, when the shark attacked her in the waist-high waves, news station WJXT reported.
The shark sunk its teeth into both her legs before she shoved the predator — which then bit her left hand and swam away, WJXT reported.
Upon hearing her screams, Peyton’s parents initially assumed she was stung by a jellyfish, the family said.
“I saw she had blood coming out of her hand and then I started going into, ‘What’s going on?’ ” Steve Shields, Peyton’s father, told WJXT. “Then when she got out, I saw there was a lot more blood coming from the lower half.”
Peyton was reportedly taken with lacerations to Flagler Hospital, where she received 40 stitches.
Despite the terrifying attack, the little girl is ready to jump back in the ocean when she is healed, according to her family.
“She’s mad because she can’t go swimming and get in the water and all that stuff,” her dad told the news station. “She said, ‘The shark’s gone. I’m ready to get back in.’ “
