Teen Attacked by Shark

Posted By: Marcus Smith 1

ORLANDO, FL -- A Florida teenager was bitten by a shark in the waters of New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

The teen, David Zettle of Edgewater, jumped off his board in chest deep water on Wednesday afternoon and his dad said the boy's entire foot went in the shark's mouth.

He described serious lacerations on the top and bottom of his foot.

Zettle said the doctor told him it was one of the worst shark injuries the hospital has treated.

"It bit me once and I tried to get away, and it bit me again," Zettle said.

Other surfers at Ponce Inlet said they saw the shark try to jerk the 15-year-old under.

"And then there was a river of blood," Zettle said.

Zettle received about 30 stitches. He and his parents said they were optimistic that there was no permanent damage.

"I'll surf there again if the waves are good," Zettle said.

Lifeguards said sharks prowl the inlet because bait fish constantly swim in and out of that area.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH - The 14th shark bite of the year occurred this afternoon when a 15-year-old Edgewater boy who was surfing on the New Smyrna Beach side of Ponce Inlet was caught on the left foot by a shark, Beach Patrol officials said.

The incident however, is what Beach Patrol officials call a "provoked attack," because the teen, Troy Zettle, stepped on the creature when he fell off his surfboard, said Capt. Scott Petersohn.

"This is the second provoked attack we've had this year," Petersohn said. "He took the wave and when he landed on he sand, he stepped on the shark. It whipped around and bit him a couple of times."

Zettle was driven by friends to Bert Fish Medical Center after the 2:30 p.m. incident, said Laura Berg, whose son was surfing with Zettle.

Petersohn said the teenager, a student at New Smyrna Beach High, will need stitches and he may have some damage to the tendon.

An Edgewater teenager was bitten on the foot by a shark Wednesday while surfing in the Atlantic Ocean off New Smyrna Beach.

It was the 14th shark bite of the year in Volusia County, but only the second that has been classified as a "provoked" bite, said Capt. Scott Petersohn of the Volusia County Beach Patrol.

Troy Zettle, 15, was treated at by rescue workers and driven to a local hospital by relatives, Petersohn said. "It was not a life- or limb-threatening injury," he said.

Most shark bites occur when a shark brushes against a person while chasing fish, Petersohn said. Provoked fights occur when a person kicks on steps on a shark. It appears that Troy stepped off his surfboard onto the shark, Petersohn said.

The area where Troy was bitten is where 90 percent of Volusia's shark bites occur and the teen is well aware of the sharks in the area, Petersohn said. "He's a frequent flyer at the inlet," Petersohn said. "It [the bite] was not a big shock to him."
