Surfer Alcindo de Souza Leão Junior, 22, was attacked today by a shark on the beach of Good Voyage, in Recife. The boy was bitten on his left leg between the knee and ankle. Sea Lion Junior left alone, being kept afloat with an open fracture, two swimmers and two firefighters and taken to the Hospital of the Restoration. He underwent surgery that lasted about two hours. According to doctors, not ruled out the possibility of having his leg amputated.

The surfer is exposed to danger knowing the risks and became part of the statistics, increasing to 46 the number of surfers and swimmers attacked by sharks - the species and tiger flat-head - since September 1992, according to the Fire Department. Of this total, 14 died. According to the boy's father, Alcindo de Souza Leao, he had knowledge of the state decree banning the practice of sports in a range that goes from 60 km Port of Suape to Olinda.

The captain Valdir Oliveira, the spokesperson for the Fire Department, explained the absence of lifeguards at the site because of the extensive range that they have to monitor. He maintained an awareness of the population, noting that since 1999, with a ban on water sports, the number of attacks has dropped significantly. "This only happens with those who evade the law," he said.
