Boy bitten by shark while snorkelling at popular Coral Bay reef

A boy snorkelling at one of Western Australia’s most popular holiday locations is due to be flown to Perth for treatment after being attacked by what was believed to be a two-metre shark.

The 10-year-old was swimming about 75 metres offshore with his father at Five Fingers Reef, near Coral Bay, when he was bitten by the bronze whaler in the foot on Friday.

The remote swimming spot is only accessible by four-wheel-drive and is popular with snorkellers.

A Royal Flying Doctor plane is due to land at Coral Bay to take the boy to Jandakot Airport where St John Ambulance crews will be waiting to take him to hospital.

Emergency crews were called to the beach about 11.14am and the boy was taken to the Coral Bay Nursing Post for treatment in an ambulance. His injuries are believed to not be life-threatening.

Five Fingers Reef has been closed as Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development staff investigate the incident. The beache’s closure will be reviewed on Saturday.

Fisheries officers are conducting land and sea patrols of the area to warn beachgoers of the incident and urge them to take additional caution in the water.

The small coastal town is a popular snorkelling spot for families and the gateway to the Ningaloo Reef in the state’s Gascoyne region.

It is the second time this year a person has been attacked in the area after spear fisherman Jackson Howson, 27, was bitten in the calf by a shark that was attempting to snatch his catch in March.

Mr Howson managed to get away mostly unscathed after punching the predator in the face.

In 2017, a woman swimming at Mauds Point had to be treated for minor injuries to her hand after she being bitten by a bull shark. Five years earlier, a man was also bitten in the forearm by a three-metre tiger shark while snokelling at The Lagoon.

If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app and Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed.
