The surfing world has been shocked to learn the victim of a shark attack in Maui has died.

The attack happened before competition kicked off on Wednesday (Tuesday, Hawaii time) and as a result, Australian stars Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons had their semi-final at the Roxy Pro postponed as action was cancelled for the day.

The World Surf League (WSL) confirmed on Thursday the tragic news that the victim of the shark attack had died.

"The WSL has learned that Tuesday's victim of the shark attack at Honolua Bay has tragically passed away," surfing's governing body said.

"Our thoughts and hearts are with the victim's family and friends as well as the entire Maui surfing community."

According to local media, the victim is a man in his 50s who was attacked in Honolua Bay after paddling out for a morning surf. A large chunk of his board reportedly ripped off in the attack.

Shark attack in Maui postpones women’s pro surfing contest

Santa Ana’s Courtney Conlogue is one of the pro surfers in Maui for the first women’s event of the year, which was postponed following a shark incident.

A recreational surfer was attacked by a shark on Tuesday morning at Honolua Bay, the same area where the world’s best women are competing in the first professional surf contest held this year.

The World Surf League posted on Facebook about the attack, announcing the competition is on hold indefinitely. “The WSL is working with local authorities and our thoughts are with the victim of this incident.” There was no word if the surfer’s injury was life-threatening.

According to Maui Now, a male surfer appears to have been bitten by a shark near a river mouth area by Honolua Bay and was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center. Ocean Safety crews hired for the nearby surf event were reportedly in the water and quickly tended to the injured surfer, who was not part of the competition, the story says.

There’s a handful of Orange County surfers in Hawaii as the first leg of the professional season gets underway. Santa Ana’s Courtney Conlogue competed in the event, as well as Florida transplant Caroline Marks, who calls San Clemente home. Both were knocked out in earlier rounds; the event was scheduled to run the quarterfinal heats this morning.

The first day of the men’s event, which includes San Clemente surfers Kolohe Andino and Griffin Colapinto and Huntington’s Kanoa Igarashi, is underway on the North Shore of Oahu for the Billabong Pipe Masters.
