Miami woman bitten by shark twice at Volusia beach

A 50-year-old Miami woman was bitten on the leg and ankle by a shark at New Smyrna Beach Thursday morning while bodyboarding, a Volusia County Beach Safety official said.

The bite marks the county’s fourth this year.

The woman, who was only identified by her age and hometown, was finishing boogie boarding near the 1100 block of North New Smyrna Beach around 11 a.m. when an unseen shark bit her left leg as she was getting off the board, Capt. Tamra Malphurs said.

She kicked at the shark while fleeing and was bitten again on the ankle.

The bites were minor, and the woman was not taken to the hospital, Malphurs said.

A shark bit an 11-year-old boy on the foot at the same beach in late July, county beach officials reported.

Volusia County is known as the “shark bite capital of the world” for the comparatively high number of beachgoers that are bitten at the county’s beaches yearly, data from the Florida Museum’s International Shark Attack File shows. Many of these bites occur at New Smyrna Beach.
