Teen surfer killed in ‘unusual’ Australia shark attack, country’s second in week

A teenage surfer died Saturday after he was mauled by a shark in Australia, marking the country’s second fatal shark attack in the past week.

Mani Hart-Deville, 15, was surfing off Wooli Beach near Grafton, about 194 miles south of Brisbane, when he was attacked. New South Wales paramedics were called about reports of an attack just before 2:30 p.m., News.com.au reports.

Hart-Deville sustained “serious injuries to his legs” and other surfers tried to save him.

“Several boardriders came to his assistance before the injured teen could be helped to shore,” NSW Police noted in a statement.

CPR efforts proved fruitless as Hart-Deville died at the scene.

The shark responsible is believed to be a white pointer measuring about 8 feet long, Peter Sweetman, of Surf Life Saving New South Wales, told 7News Sydney.

“It’s unusual, such a remote place as this, for a shark attack to happen,” Sweetman said. “All you can do is be aware that they are there. Beyond that, if you want to surf, you just have to take the risks that go with being there.”

As a result of the attack, all beaches along Clarence Shore — from Wooli to Iluka, about 60 miles north — will be closed for 24 hours. Surf Live Saving NSW is still looking for the shark responsible.

Helen Dobra, a local resident, recalled speaking to one of the surfers who said he witnessed the incident.

“He said that he was in the water and a really big great white shark came up and took a bite and he was, you know, screaming out,” Dobra told 9News. And then the surfer said that the shark then came again for another attack. He said another surfer was actually bravely went and tried to get the shark off him and then they pulled him out of the water.”

A week ago Saturday, a 34-year-old was spearfishing off the coast of Queensland in eastern Australia when he was attacked by a shark. He too sustained leg injuries and died following the attack.

A 60-year-old surfer was killed by a shark near northern New South Wales in early June.

In April, 23-year-old Zachary Robba, who worked for Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, was also killed by a shark.

A shark also killed a 57-year-old diver off of Western Australia back in January, The Associated Press reports.
