Shark 'struck' man during evening swim on central Queensland coast

A man has escaped with minor injuries after being struck by a shark during an evening swim on the central Queensland coast.

The man, aged in his 30s, was snorkelling at Bargara, 13 kilometres east of Bundaberg, when he was "struck" just after 7pm on Saturday.

Paramedics initally reported the incident as a "shark bite" but later said they did not believe the man's "minor lacerations" to his foot came from the shark's teeth.

Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman Sean Quarmby said the man suffered bruising to his chest and abdomen from being smacked by the shark.

"It is unknown what caused the laceration to his foot, the patient reports he was struck in the chest by the shark but not bitten," he said.

"It is understood the patient did make his own way home and then he and his partner began to drive towards Bundaberg Base Hospital."

Mr Quarmby said the man's partner called paramedics on the way for help.

He was taken to Bundaberg Hospital in a stable condition. ... 53fq3.html
