Great white shark drags tourist towards deep sea while fishing on family holiday

A tourist fishing off the coast of South Africa was dragged towards deep sea by a great white shark

A tourist had a harrowing encounter with a great white shark off the coast of South Africa when the deadly predator dragged him towards the deep sea as he was fishing with his family.

Sea rescue crews raced out to waters off Natures Valley – a popular holiday resort – after eyewitnesses said a man had been dragged out to sea by a shark at about 10am on Wednesday.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Plettenberg Bay station commander Marc Rodgers said the victim had been on holiday with his family at the time of the attack.

The eyewitness had at first said the shark took holidaymaker Theodore Prinsloo out into sea and that a flotation buoy was the only thing that remained.

When the rescue crew first arrived, they found the buoy with the head of a mussel cracker fish attached to it.

Theodore, who was spearfishing, was later able to signal his location to the crew after seeing their boat and emerged from the water without injury.

The tourist, from Wellington, said fishermen had warned him about a 16-foot great white in the area close to where he had been swimming the day before.

One day later, Theodore returned to the site and stayed close to some rocks thinking he would be safe.

Mr Rodgers later commented on the incident on Facebook, adding: “About 20 minutes after catching an approximately eight to nine-kilogram mussel cracker that he hooked to a flotation buoy attached to his spear gun, the shark grabbed the fish and made off out to sea dragging to buoy and Theodore with it.

“Theodore was able to release to flotation buoy after being dragged for a distance of about 50 metres towards deep sea and he quickly swam ashore.”
