Shark attack off Cape Grenville in Far North Queensland leaves woman with serious leg injuries
By Sharnie Kim and staff

A 21-year-old crew member from a crayfishing boat has been attacked by at least one shark in Great Barrier Reef waters off Cape York Peninsula.

It happened when the woman was snorkelling around the boat near Magra Islet, off Cape Grenville, about 6:30pm on Sunday.

She was brought ashore to the islet where a rescue helicopter picked her up.

The woman was initially flown to the Lockhart River Medical Clinic but was then taken to Cairns Hospital by the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) where she is in a stable condition.

Paramedics said she suffered serious injuries to her lower right leg.

Babcock Australasia's rescue helicopter, based in Horn Island in the Torres Strait, picked the woman up from Magra Islet to take her to Lockhart River.

Rescue crew officer Dominic Hodalin said the woman had severe lacerations but was speaking and conscious.

"They were actually in quite good spirits," he said.

"We had a pretty good chat about diving and recent movies on the way back to the mainland.

"The crew did an outstanding job in saving their teammate's life thanks to their quick and appropriate first aid response to what was indeed a very stressful situation far from the mainland.

"They were all a bit shook up and very happy to see us, but their actions definitely saved their teammate's life in this case."

Two sharks thought to be behind attack

Mr Hodalin said it was thought two sharks might have been involved.

"The patient stated themselves it was a tiger shark they saw in the vicinity," he said.

Mr Hodalin said shark attacks were extremely rare but the rescue helicopter had been tasked to them in the past.

"There is a risk when you're swimming at those feeding times of dawn or dusk," he said.

"Unprovoked shark attacks are extremely rare, whatever the time, but people can take basic precautions such as not entering the water at feeding times, not swimming in river mouths, and not swimming in areas where large amounts of bait fish are thought to be schooling."

The woman is an employee of seafood company MG Kailis, which exports tropical rock lobsters.

In a statement, the company said it had spoken to both the woman and her family, and asked for their privacy to be respected.

"The MG Kailis Group is assisting her family to join her in Cairns to provide support," the statement said.

"Our thoughts are with her and we will provide whatever additional support we can."
