Cape Town - A friend of injured surfer Stuart Anderson spotted a shark in the water behind him while they were about 50 metres offshore, according to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).

"He saw the shark behind them and he then too headed in the direction of the rocks," said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

The local surfer, Jonathan Gersh, 46, of Newlands, Cape Town, was also in the water at the time, about 20 metres away from Anderson, who is recovering in hospital in George after the shark attack at Morris Reef, Still Bay on Sunday.

Gersh saw the shark swimming behind Anderson and another friend, Petro van Nierop, 21, before the predator disappeared underwater.

"On reaching them at the rocks he realised that Stuart had bite marks on his right leg and thigh and he abandoned his surf board and assisted Stuart out of the water onto the rocks."

He was helped by two junior NSRI volunteers, Arno Grewe, 16, and Leon Combrinck, 17.

"Together they got Stuart to the beach... and together they bandaged the wounds on Stuart's right leg and thigh while the NSRI Still Bay duty crew were alerted.

"All of those involved are friends. They are all commended for their efforts," Lambinon said.
