Puerto Rico fisherman bit on hand in rare shark attack
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Authorities in Puerto Rico say a man who was hunting fish underwater has been bitten by a shark off the island's southwest coast. He is expected to recover.
Police said 36-year-old Benjamin Rios was bitten on his left hand by a large lemon shark that attacked his diving bag on Friday morning. Authorities said a fellow fisherman diving with Rios hit the shark with his harpoon.
The attack occurred about 11 miles (18 kilometers) from the popular coastal town of Cabo Rojo.
Shark attacks in the U.S. territory are rare.
