Boy tells of brush with shark

An 11-year-old bodyboarder has described a tug that ripped his flipper before spotting a fin breach the surface at Mullaloo beach yesterday in another suspected Perth shark incident.

Andrew Gavriliu was bodyboarding with a mate and another person about 50m from the shore about midday when he first felt the tug at his foot.

"I kept feeling this thing tugging and when I looked back I saw a fin," the Year 6 student at Whitford Catholic Primary School said.

Andrew yelled "shark" to alert his mate and other surfers who were nearby. He caught a wave to the shore and alerted other swimmers.

"At first I thought it was nothing, but then I saw the fin and I was scared," he said. "It was a shark. There were two people in line with me and if it hadn't stopped..."

Andrew, who has been surfing since he arrived from Canada about three years ago, said his fin had marks and a massive rip from the incident.

His mother Raleuca Gavriliu said her son was not hurt in the incident.

The encounter was reported to Water Police about 1pm by a man on the beach who told them of a shark that may have been 2m long.

The man told police he saw the marks on Andrew's flipper.

It is understood Andrew ran along the beach yelling at others to get out of the water.

The Water Police alerted Surf Life Saving WA, which posted details of the sighting on Twitter and sent the lifesaving rescue helicopter to patrol the area as local rangers warned other beach users.

Two bodyboarders went into the water in the hours after the attack, saying they were not worried about a shark hanging around because a ranger told them the helicopter had not seen it.

In June, Martin Kane was attacked while paddling his surf ski off a beach about 1km south of the scene of yesterday's incident.

The 3.5m shark rammed his ski before biting it in half, forcing the 62-year-old to swim about 150m to safety.
There have been five fatal shark attacks in WA in the past year.
