Watch your ankles in the ocean this afternoon and evening -- two people were nipped by sharks yesterday in waters off New Smyrna Beach, the Volusia County Beach Patrol confirmed.

Both bites were minor, as is usually the case in Volusia.

The first bite happened around 4:30 p.m. Sunday just south of the jetty, where a 58-year-old Orlando woman suffered a small puncture wound to her left ankle. She was in 3 feet of water at the time, Beach Patrol Capt. Tammy Marris said. The woman drove herself to a hospital.

The second bite was around 6:30 p.m. in the same area. An 8-year-old girl from Deltona was boogie-boarding in 2 to 3 feet of water when she was bitten on the calf and hand. She, too, suffered minor puncture wounds, and her parents took her to the hospital, Marris said.

Those bites brought Volusia's total this year to six, all minor.
